Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg to moderate Docs to Watch panel at film fest. Watch The Dark Crystal Full Movie. Do you recognize the name Scott Feinberg? If you answered “no” to that question, you likely aren’t the sort of person who keeps track of the relative ranking in popularity and critical acclaim of contemporary films, theatrical productions or TV series, and the folks who make them. That’s because when it comes to writers covering the U.
S.- based entertainment industry, Feinberg sits darn near the top of the heap. As editor in chief of the showbiz website which bears his name, this Brandeis University alumnus and awards columnist for The Hollywood Reporter (he’s held that position since 2. Los Angeles Times) has, over time, earned a fairly sterling reputation for predicting just which movies, plays, shows or participants thereof will take home top industry awards each year. This impressive knack for calling such winners accurately in advance — for example, he holds one of the world’s greatest track records at predicting the Oscars — has made Feinberg a key media pundit and a respected name on the film festival circuit. Put another way: he sees a lot of new movies. That fact makes him the perfect moderator for the Savannah Film Festival’s Docs To Watch Roundtable Discussion at 6 p.
Oct. 2. 5 at the Lucas. The number of films I watch really fluctuates depending on the month,” he tells me by phone in advance of an impending trip to the Savannah Film Festival, where, for the second year in a row, he’ll moderate a roundtable discussion of both established and up- and- coming documentary filmmakers.“In the month of September, for example, I went to the Telluride, Toronto and New York film festivals because that’s really the first leg of the awards season.
At those, I could see three or four in a given day — which is not the rate at which I generally watch films. Each year from September through February is Oscar season, from March through June is Tony season — when I’ll relocate to New York and catch up on a lot of Broadway stuff — and then I’m back in L. A. for the Emmy season.”If all that sounds a bit overwhelming, it likely is. Although Feinberg is quick to add that a good amount of the heaviest lifting is already done for him by the very nature of his unique position.“I should emphasize that I’m very lucky to be doing that,” he says.

Our critics, for instance, have to see everything. But for something to be in discussion for one of these awards, there’s usually some redeeming value in it. It’s always nice to have the garbage weeded out for me.“Ultimately, I’m trying to provide for both people in the business, and people who have no idea how the business works, an understanding of how we wind up with the nominees and winners that we do. Sometimes, I’ll be at the first screening of something that wasn’t anticipated as a contender, and my job is to also identify those.”When I suggest that the massive uptick in popularity that documentary features now enjoy is rooted in both the digital revolution and a general disappointment in the number of factual stories the mainstream media reports in anything approaching an in- depth fashion, Feinberg agrees wholeheartedly.“Exactly,” he offers. To me, the biggest thing of all is that the barrier of entry to people who want to make docs is basically gone. As you said, the low cost of high- quality equipment allows everyone to get in the game if they want to. Also, in terms of getting one’s work out there — more film festivals exist now than ever before.
And there is now the ability to stream your work on You. Tube or your own website, or any number of other sites. Plus, thanks to cable and streaming outlets like Netflix and Amazon, there are more places than ever before that need content to fill their programming schedule or catalog.“It’s a perfect storm of things that have led to the documentary genre being as deep as ever, and I really applaud the Savannah Film Festival for recognizing this and championing great documentary filmmakers. They’ve basically made themselves THE stop on the film festival awards circuit that specializes in and appreciates documentary filmmaking. It’s a beautiful place and this festival is as hospitable and well- run as any that I know of. I think the word- of- mouth buzz has spread and now they clamor to have their films invited or to be on the panel that we’re doing there.”Directors in attendance for this year’s panel will include Evgeny Afineevsky, Kirby Dick, Liz Garbus, Bobcat Goldthwait, Robert Gordon, Matthew Heineman, Asif Kapadia, Crystal Moselle, Morgan Neville, Geeta Patel and Ravi Patel.
It’s also worth noting that those who cannot attend the panel in person can view it online at Hollywood. Reporter. com, as part of the SFF’s partnership with his magazine. Feinberg stresses the importance of such international exposure to the filmmakers involved.“You don’t just have the privilege of talking about your films with and in front of people from SCAD or Savannah, but you’re also going to reach the entire industry,” he explains.“Oscar voters end up with a long list of over 1. Being realistic, if they only have time to watch 2. Savannah is a great way to set yourself apart from the pack. It helps to get these movies on the radar of not only those voters, but also of the public, who will then search for them in theaters, Netflix or wherever.”Feinberg says that while the final list of “Docs To Watch” is selected by the SFF, he works in close collaboration with them, and that they appreciate his input. We see each other at various festivals throughout the year where we are on the lookout for great movies.
But by this time of year, I have likely seen more of the eligible documentaries than they have.“I think all the docs represented at the festival this year are well worth the price of a ticket,” he enthuses. People sometimes think of watching a documentary as being subjected to a lesson. And that may be — but it doesn’t have to mean a slide show or some sort of boring thing to suffer through. If you go into a documentary with an open mind, more often than not you’re going to be pleasantly surprised by the experience, and that is certainly the case with each of the films we’ve selected.”He also feels folks who have never attended the Savannah Film Festival will be pleasantly surprised by that experience as well.“I cannot say enough good things about it. Even if we were not collaborators at this point, I would figure out a way to get down there and attend anyway.
I am so impressed with the place, the people of the town and especially the people who run the festival and how they run it. It’s a class act all around.”IF YOU GOWhat: Docs to Watch Roundtable discussion. Watch Goats Online (2017). When: 6 p. m. Oct.
