Reconnaissance flights into powerful Hurricane Irma began on Sunday, providing the National Hurricane Center with invaluable information about the storm and its possible path. The NOAA team took its first flight into the core of Hurricane Irma over the weekend and came back with weather data as well as video of its flight into the storm's fierce eyewall. Here's a look at that flight, which was released on Monday: The plane used on this flight was a WP- 3. D Orion aircraft. NOAA has several Hurricane Hunter aircraft, including two P- 3s. One is nicknamed "Kermit," the other "Miss Piggy."It was Kermit that punched the eye wall of Irma in the video.

According to NOAA the scientists on these flights deploy Global Positioning System (GPS) dropwindsondes into the storm. These instruments send back measurements of pressure, humidity, temperature, wind direction and wind speed, which give meteorologists a detailed look at the structure of the storm and its intensity. The aircraft also have Doppler radar on their tails as well as lower fuselage radar systems that scan the storm vertically and horizontally, according to NOAA. The P- 3s can also deploy probes called bathythermographs that measure the temperature of the sea.
